The 50th Mason Dixon Games were special for the DCAC Youth Runners who took to the boards on Friday March 5th, 2010. The distance race fields were full of the States fastest kids and our runners were primed for action.

Girls 1500 Meters
Emily Bean and her team mates had been looking forward to Mason Dixon for some time. Emily is an 8th Grader (along with Jessica Byrd, Kate Crawford, Christina Rucinski, Emily Rielding and Amanda Jaworski). But unlike many 8th Grade kids they had competed at MD only once before (their 6th Grade Season was a snow out).

The first heat featured stellar speed with Daviess Counties Whitney O'Brian and College View's Amelia Reynolds. The heat also held the Vincent twins, Allie and Layney. With that much talent on one very small track the opening 200 was predictably at a break neck pace. It took more than 400 meters for the race to sort itself out and have Emily Bean and Whitney O"Bryan move to the front. Those two then back and methodically clicked off 41 second laps (200 meters) one after another. With 350 meters left in the race, Emily moved to the front and began to slowly stretch out a lead that would last to the finish. Both girls shattered the previous Meet Record of 5:17.17 (held by DCAC Runner Vanessa Triplett since 2006). Emily finishing first in 5:07.31 with Whitney second in 5:08.82.

Christina Rucinski ran in the last heat (of 5) and ran an extremely impressive 6th Place (Overall) finish while clocking in at 5:32.16. This was despite running virtually the entire race by herself. Christa Brutscher led all 7th Graders with strong 8th Place, Brianna Wolken had a memorable debut at MD while taking 12th Place and being the fastest 6th Grader in 5:44.07. Kate Crawford overcame early traffic problems and ran a PR of 5:44.52 in 13th Place. Ally Brutscher was 20th in 5:58.13. Allison Burgin (6th Grader) was running in her first ever indoor meet (while nursing and ailing Achilles) and PR's in 5:59.12. Emily Riedling surged late to finish in 6:29.18 in her first race of the season.

Boys 1500 Meters
Max Mudd and Chris Striegel ran the most patient of races of the evening in waiting out the early sprint fest and steadily moving up from 9th and 10th place (in the heat) to nearly steal the race. Max used steady splits in methodically overtaking many runners on his trip. The final 200 meters saw Max move onto the shoulder of eventual winner Patrick Gregory nearing the last turn. Gregory's final push was enough for the win. Chris Striegel closed strong as well to run a PR of 4:43.68 and take 4th Place.

Jacob Wunsch was running on a severely sprained  ankle that was so swollen in it barely fit into his shoe, Despite the discomfort Jacob was able to bang out a 5:07.66 and take 10th Place. Sixth Grader Trenton Fryman was 12th in 5:11.54 and Austin Snyder was 14th (5:15.22) in his first Mason Dixon Games.

Girls 800
Jessica Byrd had a long wait between her 3rd Place Long Jump finish and her 800 Heat. But she showed no anxiety from it, as she blistered the field in a PR time of 2:32.45. Running a flawless 4 laps, Jessica used her strength to pull away in the final 200 meters. Emily Bean was second in 2:36.33 Christina Rucinski smashed her PR in her second race of the night running 2:40.8 in the 800.0. Kate Crawford also ran a Personal Best in 2:51.02 and a 9th Place finish. Sophie Beavin won her heat in 2:56.73 (19th Place overall) and may have been tops of the Sixth Graders. Brianna Wolken (missing from results as of this writing) ran an impressive 2:57 and  Allison Burgin came back strong in running 3:00.00. Emily Riedling ran a smooth 3:05 take 2nd Place in her heat and finish her evening strong.

Boys 800
The Boys 800 was four laps of chaos when rabbits came out and attempted to win the 4 lap race in the first lap. Nonetheless the seasoned half milers were patient and ran their races, ignoring the buzz. Max Mudd again was able to hold pace as the race in front of him died an ugly death. This enable Max to close to within an eyelash of the lead and to take third in a 3 way photo finish. His time of 2:14.43 was a PR by 4 seconds.  Chris Striegel ran a stellar 2:25.57 while having the disadvantage of being in the Second Heat. Jacob Wunsch and Austin Snyder finished 12th and 13th respectively in 2:3166 and 2:23.08
